The Bernese Mountain Dog came originally from the Canton of Berne in Switzerland, after which the breed is named. They were used as farm dogs, working with livestock, and as watchdogs. The Bernese Mountain Dog is very gentle, playful, and excellent with children. He likes cool weather rather than warm, for his coat is very thick.
